A belle-époque pastry house from 1894. Stained glass, Belgian mirrors, the kind of room Villa-Lobos actually drank coffee in. It's as much a tourist experience as a bakery now, but an honest one, not a fabricated trap; the Forte de Copacabana outpost adds the view. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea only.
Go in eyes-open that you're paying for the room as much as the pastry. It's worth it once.

A legendary late-night sandwich counter since the 1950s. The pernil (roast pork) sandwich stacked with cheese and a slice of pineapple is the order, no menu debate required. Standing-room, no reservations, open into the small hours Thursday through Saturday.
The after-the-bars sandwich, not a dinner plan: go hungry at 2am, not 8pm.

A treehouse-like hillside restaurant in Santa Teresa, serving organic, biodynamic Brazilian cooking from chef Ana Castilho, with a hundred-plus cachaça labels and a view over the city worth the trip on its own. Time the table for a daytime or early lunch rather than a late dinner; Santa Teresa's side streets aren't a place to be walking after dark, and a taxi door-to-door both ways is the standard move, not a paranoid one.
Book for lunch, not dinner, unless you're taking a taxi straight to the door and back.
A two-Michelin-star tasting menu from chef Rafa Costa e Silva, just ten seats, produce from his own gardens. This is the one big splurge of a Rio month, not a casual dinner, and it books out accordingly.
The one night I'd actually plan the rest of the week around.
A traditional Portuguese restaurant since 1903, with white-jacketed waiters and old photographs on the walls. The cabrito (goat) with broccoli rice and the bolinho de bacalhau are what it's known for. A solid dinner before or after a night out in Lapa; the main strip is busy and generally fine, but treat the side streets with normal nightlife-district caution after dark.

A specialty bakery-café with multiple Botafogo outlets, about a ten-minute walk from Botafogo metro. One of the three names that come up again and again in remote-worker café roundups here, and sit-down-friendly, not a grab-and-go counter.

A bookstore with an upstairs café (Bazzar Café on the mezzanine) and the most-cited laptop-friendly literary café in Ipanema. Reliable seating, and a shelf to browse between emails.

A Leblon institution since 1961, officially designated Carioca Cultural Heritage and part of the city's Circuito dos Botequins. The bolinho de bacalhau (codfish fritters) and an ice-cold chopp are the reason it's still full every evening.
The genuine boteco experience, not a version built for tourists.
Open since 1955 and widely cited as pouring the best chopp in the city. Old-school Carioca bohemia, standing-and-sidewalk-table energy, a short walk from Bracarense.

Founded in 1939 and the defining Rio sunset ritual: buy a cold beer and pastizinhos at the counter, then join everyone else on the sea wall across the street to watch the sun drop behind Sugarloaf. It's a street scene, not a sit-down restaurant, and it gets genuinely crowded on weekends.
Arrive early on a weekend or you're standing, not sitting, for the sunset.
A recreated slice of Northeastern Brazil inside Rio, with 700-plus stalls, live forró, regional food and crafts. A real, well-loved cultural institution, not a tourist fabrication, but go by ride-share door-to-door and at the times below; the surrounding neighborhood is one to approach with care after dark.
Go for the forró and the food, both ways by Uber. Not a neighborhood to wander into on foot after dark.
